Outdoor protection for campuses requires the monitoring of numerous surveillance camera feeds—which many school districts might not have the manpower to watch 24/7.
Jones Elementary School now has a locked entryway that serves as a secure room for visitors to campus looking to be buzzed into the school. The entryway is locked off from the school itself.
The door locks are simple to use. A pin at the door’s base slides into a hole in the floor, barricading the door from being opened. When activated, the door lock sends an emergency alert to local law enforcement.
“We wanted to figure out a solution for stemming workplace violence by getting ahead of the curve because it's a national trend, and, unfortunately, we are not immune to it,” said Todd Miller, public safety and security specialist for SSM's St. Louis region, which includes eight hospitals.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and Sycamore Township Fire Department helped the school facilitate the interactive drill, which included an intruder entering the building, police responding and firing blanks, students evaluating the situation and first responders helping those who were labeled as being injured.
